The Music

T#e Accidentals are made up of Anna Hopkins (flute), Jo Westaway (soprano) and Karen Smith (piano). These long-standing friends have joined forces in order to share their musical passions and exciting repertoire. Being established solo musicians in their own right brings a wealth of knowledge, skill and exceptional standards to all of their performances.

Jo says, “There is something very special about these intelligent and musical women. Performing with them is a pleasure because of the close connection we have formed and the way in which we intuitively support each other”.

Anna studied at the Royal College of Music for four years where she obtained the A.R.C.M diploma/ G.R.S.M (Hons) degree, and Advanced Certificate in performance. After leaving College, Anna took further studies with several eminent flautists, before embarking on a career as a freelance flautist in London. Recital venues include St Martin in the Fields, St Georges Hanover Square as well as historic houses and castles. She returned to Norfolk in 2005 and quickly established herself as a chamber musician and soloist and has given many recitals and concerts throughout East Anglia and beyond. Anna has performed at several Norfolk music festivals as well as lunchtime recitals and is also a regular guest soloist with several choirs. In 2017 Anna became co principal flute with the Norwich Philharmonic orchestra. Anna teaches at Town Close School in Norwich as well as privately. She is also a music examiner for Trinity College London, a career that takes her to venues throughout the country and abroad.

Karen was born in London in 1970 and had her first encounter with a musical instrument at the age of 4. Since then she hasn’t really stopped playing, be it piano, clarinet, saxophone, guitar or percussion! During her teenage years Karen played in the Norfolk County Youth Orchestra & Wind Band, the National Scout & Guide Concert Band and the National Scout & Guide Orchestra – her first appearance on a vinyl record was with the NS&G Concert Band in 1983. This just cemented her love of music & made a career choice very easy. Professionally she has been lucky enough to work with many amazing musicians all over the world but is now happily settled in Norfolk, teaching both privately & for the county music service as well as accompanying singers and instrumentalists.

Since being formed, T#e Accidentals have performed all over East Anglia with great success and can provide you with the perfect musical experience, whatever the occasion – weddings, parties, corporate hospitality, christenings, Classical concerts – we have a broad repertoire of music from shows and musicals, pops, light Classical and Classical, and can accommodate all tastes.
